The Sipan Royal Tombs Museum is located in Lambayeque city. It was inaugurated on November 8, 2001. This important museum exhibits all the treasures found at the Sipan archaeological site since 1987. The design of the museum evokes the ceremonial architecture of the ancient Moche. The red and ochre yellow colors and its entrance by a long ramp transport us back to the distant times of this opulent civilization.

The museum is organized across three levels. The visit begins by descending from the third level to the first, following the funerary structure of Huaca Rajada.

– The third level offers an introduction to Moche culture (territorial extent, agriculture, fishing, goldsmithing, architecture, and pottery). Likewise, the Moche worldview — their understanding of the world, humanity, and the gods — is explained in detail using the iconography they left behind in their ceramics.

– The second level is entirely dedicated to showcasing the objects discovered during the excavation process at Sipan. From the central area, visitors can see a replica of the Tomb of the Lord of Sipan, which presents in detail the burial pattern, the sacrifices of all the tomb’s attendants, and the arrangement of various objects and offerings. On this same level, visitors will also find the objects from the Priest’s tomb.

– The first level displays the skeletal remains of the Lord of Sipan, placed inside a solid coffin. Also, are exhibited the findings from other lower-ranking tombs, as well as the treasures of the Old Lord of Sipan. Artifacts from a looted tomb and others recovered by the police bring this majestic exhibition to a grand close.

The final section of the museum is called the “Royal House.” Here, 35 mannequins represent the members of the Moche elite. The Lord of Sipan is positioned at the center with his entire court. To the left is the religious class, including priests and musicians. On the right side is located the military class, with military leaders and soldiers.
